The 22nd Tactical Air Support Squadron played an essential role during the Vietnam War, delivering vital air support and reconnaissance capabilities to ground forces. Through its dedicated operations, the squadron enhanced the effectiveness of allied combat missions and contributed significantly to the safety and operational success of personnel engaged on the front lines.

Activation and Deployment

The 22nd Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS) was officially activated on April 26, 1965, and formally organized on May 8, 1965. Initially, the squadron was stationed at Binh Thuy Air Base in South Vietnam. In January 1970, the unit relocated to Bien Hoa Air Base, where it continued its critical forward air control mission from this new location.

Mission and Operations

The squadron’s primary assignment was forward air control (FAC), a vital role that involved directing air strikes in support of ground troops, conducting reconnaissance missions, and marking targets for attack aircraft. Forward Air Controllers flew missions at low altitudes and slower speeds to effectively identify enemy positions and coordinate timely air support for ground operations.

Aircraft and Equipment

  • O-1 Bird Dog: Used from 1965 to 1971, this light observation aircraft was well-suited for FAC missions due to its maneuverability and its ability to operate at low speeds and altitudes.

  • O-2 Skymaster: Introduced in 1967, the O-2 Skymaster improved mission effectiveness with enhanced visibility for pilots and twin-engine reliability, which increased safety during operations.

Awards and Recognition

  • Presidential Unit Citation

  • Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Combat “V” Device

  • Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm

Key Actions in Combat

The 22nd TASS played a crucial role in several major engagements throughout South Vietnam:

  • Tet Offensive i1968, the 22nd TASS served as the “eyes in the sky” over IV Corps. Pilots identified enemy forces, marked targets, and directed airstrikes that helped blunt Viet Cong offensives in Can Tho, Vinh Long, and My Tho. Their actions were crucial in stabilizing the Mekong Delta during one of the most dangerous periods of the Vietnam War.

  • Can Tho: During Viet Cong attacks on the provincial capital, Forward Air Controllers from the 22nd TASS directed precise airstrikes that were instrumental in repelling assaults on the airfield and key government buildings.

  • Vinh Long: Amid heavy fighting around the airfield, the squadron provided continuous FAC coverage, preventing Viet Cong forces from overtaking defensive positions.

  • My Tho: FACs coordinated airstrikes along Highway 4, the main supply route through the Mekong Delta, helping to keep supply lines open during intense combat operations.

The Forward Air Control Role

Pilots of the 22nd TASS flew low and slow over the battlefield, carefully scanning the terrain for any signs of enemy activity, such as fresh tracks, hidden camps, or troop movements. When enemy forces were detected, Forward Air Controllers would call in fighter-bombers and mark targets using smoke rockets or white phosphorus. They then directed the attacking aircraft onto the designated targets and assessed the results of the strikes, often while under heavy ground fire.

Summary and Impact

Throughout these critical engagements, the skill and bravery of the 22nd TASS Forward Air Controllers proved indispensable. Their constant airborne surveillance and rapid response to shifting threats ensured vital support for ground forces and provided continuous protection for strategic locations. The squadron’s adaptability in the face of rapidly changing battlefield conditions was a decisive factor in the successful defense of the region.
